The organization that connects medical school graduates with residency training programs says 11 residents are coming to Sault Ste. Marie this summer, including two pediatric residents. The Canadian Resident Matching Service said the residents will be in place by July at Group Health Centre, Sault Area Hospital and Algoma Public Health. In addition to pediatrics, the cohort includes five family medicine residents, two family medicine/emergency medicine residents, one psychiatry resident and one public health and preventive medicine resident. “This is a tremendous achievement for our community and an investment in the future of pediatric care in Sault Ste. Marie,” Dr. Jonathan DellaVedova, consulting pediatrician at GHC and chief of pediatric and neonatal services at SAH, said in the release. Future physicians “We have long been committed to training future physicians, and adding pediatrics to the list of specialties that can be pursued primarily in Sault Ste. Marie is a proud milestone.” Lil Silvano, president and CEO of GHC, said the news is a “milestone” for health care in the community. “With the arrival of residents from family medicine and other programs, we are strengthening our ability to deliver reliable, accessible services for people at every stage of life,” Silvano said. “GHC is proud to support this growth and to offer an integrated, team-based environment where future physicians can learn, contribute, and ultimately choose to build their careers.” “These training opportunities help support the continued strength and sustainability of care across our programs, our hospital and our community,” added Ila Watson, SAH president and CEO.
