Sault Ste. Marie man faces charges following parking lot thefts

A 42-year-old man has been charged following a series of vehicle break-ins in a downtown Sault Ste. Marie parking lot over the weekend.

After 911 operators received two reports of smash-and-grab thefts from vehicles in the 200 block of Queen Street East at about 9:15 a.m. on Saturday members of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service responded.

Investigation leads to arrest

“An investigation revealed the accused, who is not known to the victims, smashed a window in each of their vehicles and stole property from one of the vehicles,” said police in a news release Monday.

Detectives obtained a warrant and located the suspect later that evening, taking him into custody around 10:30 p.m.

The man has been charged with one count of theft, two counts of mischief and failing to comply with a probation order.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
