Sault man wanted for stealing ATV charged with stealing packages

A 43-year-old man who was first arrested in June for unlawfully driving an ATV in Sault Ste. Marie was arrested this week for stealing the ATV, as well as packages from an apartment building.

Police first encountered the suspect June 13, when a 911 caller reported someone driving an ATV on Shannon Road.

“Officers were dispatched to the area and conducted a traffic stop of the ATV,” police said in a news release Jan. 14.

“Upon speaking with the driver, who was identified as the accused, officers issued several Provincial Offence Notices.”

Offences included driving without a licence, a permit, plates, insurance and while suspended.

He was released and the ATV was towed. Police soon realized the ATV had been stolen in May.

“A warrant was obtained for the accused’s arrest,” the release said.

Then police received reports of packages being stolen from an apartment building on Manitou Drive on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. An investigation revealed the packages were stolen by the same 43-year-old man.

He was arrested Jan. 13 and charged with two counts of theft under $5,000 and one count of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on March 16.
