Sault high school Relay for Life surges past fundraising goal

St. Mary's College in Sault Ste. Marie hosts its third Relay for Life and raises more than $73,000 for Cancer research.

St. Mary’s College celebrated its third annual Relay for Life on Thursday, raising more than $105,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society – far exceeding its initial $45,000 target.

The event, held at Father Higgins Field, brought together students, staff, cancer survivors, and community members for a 12-hour fundraiser featuring themed laps, including spirit, colour, and 80’s-themed walks.

The day began with a Survivors’ Lap and included a speech by Mikayla Krezek, a cancer survivor and recent graduate of the school.

In an email to CTV News, Danielle Dupuis, a communications officer for the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board, praised the school’s efforts.

“The board is incredibly proud of the students, staff, and entire school community at St. Mary’s College for their extraordinary efforts today and in the months leading up to this event,” Dupuis wrote.

“Their dedication, energy, and compassion have been truly inspiring.”

She added that donations were still being counted, calling the achievement “a testament to the hard work, unity, and spirit of giving that define the school.”

Eighteen students from Grades 9 to 12 organized the event, which supports the Canadian Cancer Society’s research, advocacy, and patient support programs.
