Robbery, sex assaults increased in Timmins last year

While overall numbers decreased, certain types of violent crimes spiked in Timmins in 2025 compared to 2024, according to a report that went to the police services board on Thursday.

Violent crime as a whole declined 4.1 per cent, but the number of robbery cases increased from 20 in 2024 to 34 last year, an increase of 70 per cent, statistics from the Timmins Police Service said.

Sexual assaults increased to 119 in 2025, compared with 86 a year earlier, an increase of 38.4 per cent. Weapons calls dropped by 26.7 per cent – from 101 in 2024 to 74 last year.

Similarly, property crime was down 10.5 per cent overall, but fraud cases rose by 21.3 per cent, with 313 total cases reported in 2025. Property damage cases increased from four in 2024 to 13 last year (up 225 per cent) while mischief cases rose to 340 incidents, up 13.7 per cent.

They were offset by drops in break and enters (down 13.9 per cent), stolen property cases (down 30 per cent) and theft cases (down 28.1 per cent).

Drug offences rose by 19 per cent in 2025, with 69 cases compared to 58 a year earlier. Family dispute calls increased by 18. 2 per cent (240 calls last year), mental health calls were up 20.7 per cent and there were 156 cases of disputes between neighbours, an increase of 11.2 per cent.

In total, police investigated 23,599 total incidents of all types last year, up by 3.8 per cent.
