Replica handgun seized after threats investigated in Sudbury

A Greater Sudbury IPV investigation led to the seizure of a replica handgun seizure. A 28-year-old man now faces weapon and threat charges.

A 28-year-old man is facing a raft of charges after an intimate partner violence investigation led Sudbury police to seize a replica firearm from a residence earlier this week.

The Greater Sudbury Police Service said patrol officers began an investigation on March 7 in relation to an individual uttering threats.

During the investigation, officers received information that the individual was in possession of a handgun.

“Officers applied for and were granted a search warrant for the individual’s residence,” police said in a news release Tuesday.

Weapon located

On Monday, members executed the search warrant and located a replica firearm. The individual was taken into custody at the scene without incident.

“No further details related to the incident will be provided to protect the identity of the intimate partner,” police said.

Charges laid

The accused has been charged with uttering threats to cause bodily harm, uttering threats to damage property, possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon, along with another firearm-related offence. Additionally, the man was charged with two counts of failure to comply with probation and two counts of possession of a firearm contrary to prohibition orders.

The accused will attend bail court on March 10 to answer to the charges.

Police reaffirm commitment to responding to violence

“The Greater Sudbury Police Service remains committed to supporting survivors, holding offenders accountable, and working collaboratively to end violence in all its forms,” the service said.

Police encourage anyone experiencing or who has experienced abuse, or who is concerned about someone’s safety, to call 9-1-1 in an emergency.
