Ontario’s Special Investigation Unit is investigating after a 41-year-old man in custody in Dryden was found in medical distress in his cell and later died in hospital.

The SIU invokes its mandate whenever someone is hurt or dies while dealing with police.

In a news release, the SIU said the man was pronounced dead Monday morning. He had been arrested Oct. 5 in Dryden “for breaching his bail conditions.”

“He was lodged in a cell at the Dryden detachment,” the release said.

“At about 6:25 a.m. on Oct. 6 … the man fell into medical distress in his cell. Officers called for EMS and provided medical care until their arrival.”

He was pronounced dead not long after he arrived at the hospital in Dryden.

Two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.
