Police standoff in Thunder Bay’s north-end ends in arrest

A 31-year-old Thunder Bay man is in custody facing multiple charges after an 11-hour police standoff at a north-end residence.

The incident began at about 2:45 a.m. on Sunday when Thunder Bay Police Service officers were dispatched to a home on Arundel Street.

Negotiation attempts unsuccessful

“Officers determined that an individual known to the family had locked themselves in the home and was preventing the residents from entering,” police said in news release Monday.

The suspect threatened officers who attempted to enter.

“Negotiators attempted to speak with the suspect, but he refused to communicate with them,” said police.

Taken into custody without incident

After confirming there were no other occupants inside the home, officers entered and took the suspect into custody without incident.

As a result, the man faces charges including being unlawfully in a dwelling house, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, failing to comply with a release order and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

The accused remains in custody pending a future court date.
