A routine vehicle investigation by the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service has resulted in a significant drug bust and the arrest of two individuals. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon on Wikwemikong Way when police conducted a traffic stop. “During the stop, officers determined that a passenger was in violation of court-ordered conditions prohibiting presence within Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory,” the police service said in a news release Sunday. Significant contraband recovered With support from the UCCM Anishnaabe Police’s canine unit, officers proceeded to seize quantities of crystal methamphetamine, cocaine and fentanyl. Police estimated the street value of the drugs seized at more than $14,000. “A number of weapons and a significant amount of Canadian currency were also recovered,” police said. As a result, two 43-year-old women, one from Sudbury and another from Gore Bay, are charged with three counts of drug trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, obstructing police and failing to comply with an undertaking. Both accused are being held in custody pending a bail hearing. Police chief praises partnerships, community Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service Chief Ron Gignac linked the seizure to broader community safety efforts. “The safety and well-being of our community is our top priority,” said Gignac. “Through strong partnerships and the trust of our community members, we are making meaningful progress in the fight against illegal drugs and criminal activity.” The arrest is connected to the ongoing Combined Manitoulin Anti-Drug Strategy. As part of that initiative, a billboard unveiling ceremony was held earlier in the week at Whitefish River First Nation. Police said the event sent a “clear and united message: No drugs means no drugs.” The police service said the community and all police forces on Manitoulin Island are standing firm in their commitment to combat the harms of illegal drugs.
