Police recover body of missing Ont. teen after boat capsizes on Mississagi River

Two people were in a boat when it overturned on the Mississagi River near Blind River on Saturday, leaving one person dead.

The body of a 19-year-old from Blind River, Ont., was recovered from the Mississagi River on Monday, concluding a multi-day search after a boating incident over the weekend.

Ontario Provincial Police responded to a marine call on the river at about 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 6 after an aluminum boat carrying two people overturned.

“One person was located and was assisted by members of the public,” OPP said in a news release Monday. “The second person was unaccounted for.”

Search efforts involved extensive resources and multiple teams

The search for the missing individual involved several OPP teams – including multiple marine units and the Underwater Search and Recovery Unit. The search operation was assisted by aerial support from drones and a helicopter.

The extensive search continued until September 8, when the missing individual was recovered from the waterway.

The ongoing investigation has been turned over to the Office of the Chief Coroner and Forensic Pathology Service. A postmortem is scheduled for Wednesday at Health Sciences North in Sudbury.

“The OPP would like to thank the Mississauga First Nation community members, friends, and family who assisted during this difficult time,” said police.
