Three commercial motor vehicle drivers have been charged with speeding following an enforcement blitz during the Labour Day weekend in the Nipigon area. Ontario Provincial Police said the CMV drivers were caught travelling between 24 and 29 km/h faster than the posted speed limit of 90 km/h. “In Ontario, commercial motor vehicles should not be able to exceed a maximum speed of 105km/h,” police said in a social media post. “Not only were the drivers charged, but so were the companies with driving or permitting operation of a commercial motor vehicle without a working speed-limiting device.” Further up Highway 17 in Marathon, the OPP charged two passenger vehicle drivers who were caught travelling “in tandem at a high rate of speed.” “One vehicle was confirmed travelling more than 140 km/h in a posted 90 km/h zone,” the OPP said. “Following an investigation, both male drivers from Niagara Falls were charged with stunt driving ... The driver of the second vehicle was also charged with follow(ing) too close.” Both drivers received an immediate 30-day driver’s licence suspension and both vehicles were impounded for 14 days. They will also have to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date. “The Marathon OPP reminds motorists that excessive speed and aggressive driving behaviours put all road users at risk,” police said. “Slow down, leave adequate space between vehicles, and help keep our highways safe.”
