Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is warning northern Manitoba residents to brace for “hazardous winter conditions” this weekend. As of Friday morning, a winter storm warning is in place for Churchill, Pukatawagan, Lynn Lake, Brochet, Tadoule Lake, Leaf Rapids, and South Indian Lake. According to weather agency, a “significant” storm is expected to begin on Friday and last throughout the weekend. It explains that precipitation and northerly winds will move into northern Manitoba overnight on Friday and into Saturday morning. The storm will start off as rain/freezing rain and then transition to snow on Saturday before winding down on Sunday afternoon. Winds will strengthen throughout the day on Saturday, with gusts as strong as 90 km/h near the Nunavut border. ECCC notes the heavy winds will taper off by Sunday afternoon and evening. The storm is expected to bring snowfall totals between 20 to 40 centimetres and heavy rain with total amounts between 20 and 40 millimetres. ECCC warns that travel in the area will likely be dangerous due to reduced visibility from blowing snow. Property and tree damage is also possible.
