Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate following a fatal police shooting on a First Nation near the Manitoba border Thursday afternoon.

The incident took place around noon in Wapekeka First Nation.

“Members of the Sioux Lookout detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police interacted with an individual armed with a knife,” police said in a news release.

“During the interaction, an officer discharged their firearm. As a result, the armed individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

The OPP notified the SIU, which is responsible for investigating cases in which someone is hurt or killed when interacting with police.

The SIU said it would release a statement on its investigation sometime Friday.
