OPP issues warning ahead of major winter storm in northern Ont.

The Ontario Provincial Police is urging drivers to exercise caution as a significant winter storm is forecast to impact northeastern Ontario this week.

“Heavy snowfall and blowing snow are expected across the region, creating slippery roads, reduced visibility and an increased risk of collisions,” said the James Bay OPP detachments in a news release Monday.

Police are reminding the public to plan for potential delays and adjust their driving behaviour for the conditions.

“Drivers are reminded to slow down and increase following distances, avoid sudden braking and use headlights in low visibility,” said OPP.

Learning from past incidents

The provincial police service pointed to earlier weather events this month as a reason for heightened caution.

The James Bay OPP responded to multiple collisions during the season’s first storm, including commercial vehicle rollovers and near misses involving emergency vehicles.

These past incidents underscore the critical need for drivers to adapt to winter weather, according to police.

Proactive steps recommended

The OPP advises the public to take several proactive steps before travelling. Drivers should clear all snow and ice from their vehicles and ensure they are winter-ready with proper tires and functioning wipers.

Police said motorists should also equip their vehicles with an emergency kit and give themselves extra time to reach their destinations.
