OPP investigating a second fatal northern Ontario snowmobile crash

Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a second fatal snowmobile crash on a marked trail in northern Ontario on Saturday.

OPP said incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 7 when police responded to a report of a single snowmobile crash on Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) Trail L123 near the intersection of Stevens Road and Swanson Road in Kapuskasing.

The driver, a 67-year-old man from Ingersoll, Ont., was pronounced deceased at the scene.

OPP technical collision investigators and a reconstructionist are assisting with the ongoing investigation.

Following the collision, police closed access to the trail to conduct their investigation.

A police social media post shortly before 4:15 p.m. confirmed the closure.

“OPP members are on scene. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area,” OPP wrote at the time.

The trail was reopened after several hours just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning, according to OPP social media accounts.

“OFSC L123 trail has reopened between OFSC L137 and OFSC L143,” the update read.

“We appreciated your patience and understanding during the investigation.”

Police are asking anyone with information related to the collision to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

This crash was reported only about 30 minutes after another fatal northern Ontario snowmobile collision in Kearney.
