OPP investigate fatal crash on Hwy. 11-17 near Thunder Bay

One person is dead after a pickup truck crashed on Highway 11-17 east of Thunder Bay, police said Sunday.

Ontario Provincial Police said its Thunder Bay detachment responded to the scene near Spruce River Road in Shuniah, Ont., at about 1:50 a.m. following reports of a single-vehicle crash.

Driver pronounced dead

“The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, a 46-year-old male from Thunder Bay, was later pronounced deceased,” OPP said in a news release.

Road closures, traffic impacts

Multiple lanes on Highway 11-17 were closed between Spruce River Road and Terry Fox Lookout Road as officers investigated.

“Please avoid the area and plan alternate routes,” OPP wrote in its initial statement on social media.

“Emergency crews are still on scene, please drive with caution,” police added later in the morning.

OPP confirmed the Highway fully reopened shortly before noon.

Ongoing investigation

OPP said officers are still investigating the incident.
