OPP charge northern driver clocked at 192 km/h in 90 km/h zone with impaired

A 28-year-old man from Englehart, Ont., is facing impaired and stunt driving charges after Ontario Provincial Police stopped a vehicle they say was travelling more than twice the posted speed limit early Sunday morning.

The traffic stop occurred on Second Street in Englehart at about 1 a.m. on Nov. 2, after OPP officers observed a vehicle being driven at 192 km/h in a posted 90 km/h zone.

Multiple charges laid following investigation

The traffic stop quickly escalated into a larger investigation, according to an OPP news release Tuesday.

“During the traffic stop, the officer detected an odour of alcohol,” said police.

“As a result of the investigation, the driver was arrested for impaired operation and transported to the OPP (Englehart) detachment for further testing.”

The accused was subsequently charged with stunt driving and impaired driving – having a blood alcohol concentration of more than 80.

Vehicle impounded, licence suspended

In addition to the charges, the motorist received an immediate 90-day administrative driver’s licence suspension and the vehicle involved was impounded at the owner’s expense.

“The vehicle was impounded for 14 days in this case,” said OPP Const. Martin Thibault in an email to CTV News.

Authorities also used the incident to issue a broader reminder to motorists.

“The OPP reminds motorists that speeding and impaired driving are leading causes of collisions on Ontario roads,” said police.
