OPP charge 2 motorists in pickups with stunt driving in less than 2 hours

Two pickup truck drivers face stunt driving charges after separate traffic stops on Highway 17 east of Mattawa last weekend, according to the Ontario Provincial Police.

OPP say officers were conducting traffic enforcement in the area when they observed a pickup truck travelling at 146 km/h in a posted 90 km/h zone at about 1:15 p.m.

As a result, a 67-year-old Timmins resident was charged with stunt driving.

Later the same day, around 2:45 p.m., police said officers conducting enforcement on the same stretch of highway stopped a second pickup truck after it was observed travelling at 160 km/h in the 90 zone.

As a result of that stop, a 43-year-old from Sudbury was charged with stunt driving.

Licences suspended, vehicles impounded

According to the OPP, in both incidents, the drivers received immediate 30-day driver’s licence suspensions and their trucks were impounded for 14 days.

Both drivers were also issued summonses and are required to appear in Provincial Offences Court at a future date.

Speeding a leading factor in collisions

Provincial police used the incident to remind motorists of the dangers of speeding.

“Speeding continues to be a leading contributing factor in fatal and serious injury collisions on Ontario roads,” OPP said in a news release.

Provincial police also reminded motorists that driving at excessive speeds significantly reduces reaction time, increases stopping distance and places all road users at risk.
