Ont. man charged for unsafe disposal of firearm in recycling bin

A 60-year-old man from Kenora, Ont., faces a firearm-related charge after police say he improperly discarded several weapons, including a firearm, in a public recycling bin last month.

Ontario Provincial Police’s Kenora detachment launched an investigation on Nov. 22 after receiving information about items resembling firearms in a recycling container accessible to the public in the city.

“The investigation revealed that several BB guns, along with a firearm, had been dropped off at the public-access recycling bin,” OPP said in a new release.

As a result of the investigation, a local man has been charged with careless handling of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device, or ammunition.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Police issue safety reminder

“The OPP reminds members of the public that firearms must be handled and disposed of safely and in accordance with the law,” said police.

“Improper disposal of firearms poses a significant risk to community safety.”

OPP added that anyone who locates a firearm should contact police immediately.

Further, the provincial police force noted that members of the public can contact the OPP for assistance regarding the safe disposal of firearms.
