Ont. driver going 148 km/h was ‘too excited’ for hockey game: police

A driver heading out in a hurry Sunday morning is facing multiple charges after police in Greater Sudbury clocked them travelling more than 60km/h over the speed limit just after 7 a.m.

“Someone was a little too excited for the hockey game yesterday morning,” the Greater Sudbury Police Service said in a social media post Monday.

“Officers from the integrated traffic safety unit stopped a driver on Municipal Road 35 in Azilda after they were caught travelling 148 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone,” added police.

As a result, the motorist is now facing multiple charges – including speeding, stunt driving, careless driving and possessing more than one licence.

Severe, immediate penalties

In addition to the charges, police impounded the vehicle for 14 days and the driver’s licence was suspended for 30 days.

The driver is required to appear in court this May to answer to the charges.

Court-imposed penalties for stunt driving may include a fine of up to $10,000, a driver’s licence suspension of up to three years and/or up to six months in jail. Drivers face a minimum first-time fine for stunt driving of $2,000 upon conviction. Motorist convicted of stunt driving may also face six demerit points, higher insurance costs and a mandatory driver improvement course.

Don’t add to the list of things to be sad about

The police used the opportunity to remind drivers about road safety in the wake of Canada’s gold medal hockey loss.

“Canada may have fallen short in the gold medal game, and yes, we’re all still grieving a little, but let’s not add traffic charges to the list of things we’re sad about,” police said.
