One person shot and killed during northern Ont. hunting trip

A 71-year-old from Greater Napanee, Ont., was shot during a hunting trip Monday morning and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ontario Provincial Police said they were called at 9 a.m. to respond to a sudden death in Kearney, along with Parry Sound EMS and the Kearney Fire Department.

In a news release Tuesday, police said they are “investigating a sudden death in Kearney, related to a firearm-related hunting incident.”

“One person, a 71-year-old from Greater Napanee, was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the release said.

The investigation is being conducted by the Almaguin Highlands OPP crime unit, under the direction of the OPP criminal investigation branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner, the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service and the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Support is also being provided by OPP Forensic Identification Services, police said.
