Greater Sudbury police said Friday afternoon that the body of a missing man has been found after a daylong search on Crowley Lake in the city’s South End. The canoe capsized Thursday evening and two of the canoeists have been rescued. A search Thursday failed to locate a 26-year-old man who was also in the boat. His remains were discovered Friday. Police responded just after 3:45 p.m. on Aug. 13, along with Greater Sudbury Fire Services and Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services. “Information received indicated that three individuals had been in a canoe on the lake when it capsized,” police said in a news release Aug. 14. Two were rescued “Two of the individuals were located by kayakers in the area and brought safely to shore; however, the third individual and the canoe remained unaccounted for.” A search of the water and shoreline area was conducted. “An aerial search was also conducted with assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police aviation services helicopter,” as well as by a Sudbury police drone. “The canoe has since been located. However, the 26-year-old man remains missing,” police said. “Search efforts are ongoing.” Remains found around 3 p.m. Friday But around 3 p.m. Friday, members of the OPP underwater search and recovery unit found the missing man “deceased in Crowley Lake.” “Our deepest condolences are with his family, friends, and all those affected by this loss,” police said. “We extend our sincere gratitude to the staff at Kivi Park for their exceptional assistance and support during this incident. Their cooperation and commitment were greatly appreciated and played an important role in the response efforts.” Officers will be clearing the area shortly.
