One injured when Sudbury police cruiser, bicycle, collide

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is asking anyone who witnessed a weekend collision in Sudbury involving a police cruiser to contact them.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is asking anyone who witnessed a weekend collision in Sudbury involving a police cruiser and a 75-year-old bike rider to contact them.

The man driving the bicycle was seriously hurt in the crash, which took place around 8:50 a.m. Oct. 18.

“A marked police cruiser was travelling westbound on Lorne Street when a collision occurred with a cyclist travelling northbound from Regent Street across Lorne Street,” Greater Sudbury Police said in a statement Monday.

“The cyclist sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital by paramedics.”

Because a civilian was injured during an interaction with police, the SIU is automatically investigating to determine what happened.

In a news release Monday, the police watchdog said the collision occurred as the officer driving the cruiser was responding to a call.

“Two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case,” the SIU said.

“One subject official has been designated at this time.”
