One charged after hatchet incident, arrest on Bay Street: Sault police

A 56-year-old in Sault Ste. Marie faces multiple charges following an incident earlier this month.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service launched an investigation on April 15 after 911 operators received a report about an incident involving a weapon that had occurred the previous day in the 100 block of East Street.

“An investigation revealed the accused had gestured toward a victim with a hatchet in a threatening manner when asked to leave the property,” said police.

Officers said no physical injuries were reported.

On April 17 at about 5:15 a.m., police received a report of an unwanted person in the 600 block of Bay Street.

“Officers were dispatched to the scene where they located and arrested the accused,” said police.

The local man was charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failing to comply with a probation order.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
