The Flames selected Carson Carels with the sixth pick in the first round of the NHL Draft Friday night

The Calgary Flames selected defenceman Carson Carels with the sixth pick in the NHL draft Friday night.

Carels, who is from Cypress River Manitoba, plays for the North Dakota Fighting Hawks in the NCAA. He’s 188 centimetres (6′2) tall and weighs 90 kilos (198 lbs).

The pick was announced by Flames legend Lanny McDonald.

Carels wasn’t at the draft. He was back home in Cypress River, working on his family’s farm.

The Toronto Maple Leafs selected former Medicine Hat Tiger Gavin McKenna with the first pick.
