Northern Ontario traffic stop nets $17,500 in cash, drugs

3 people were arrested after a traffic stop in Kirkland Lake netted police methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine and cannabis with a street value of nearly $14,000

A proactive traffic stop by Ontario Provincial Police in Kirkland Lake on Saturday has resulted in a significant drug seizure and criminal charges against three individuals.

The incident occurred on Oct. 25 while officers were on general patrol and stopped a vehicle on Taylor Avenue.

Warrant leads to search

“Police identified the driver as having outstanding warrants from Durham Regional Police Service,” said OPP in a news release Wednesday.

The driver was immediately taken into custody.

“Police located controlled drugs and substances that led to a search of the vehicle and passengers,” said OPP.

As a result of the search, officers seized suspected cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine and cannabis with an estimated street value of more than $13,900. Police also confiscated baggies, cellphones, scales and other drug paraphernalia along with more than $3,600 in cash.

Multiple charges laid

The driver, a 24-year-old man from Ajax, Ont., is now charged with two counts of drug trafficking, drug possession, possession of property obtained by crime, having liquor in an open container in an unauthorized place, having care or control of a vehicle with cannabis available and three counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

Additionally, a 28-year-old woman from Englehart has been charged with three counts of drug trafficking, two counts of drug possession, possession of property obtained by crime, and three counts of failing to comply with a release order.

Both the man from Ajax and the 28-year-old were remanded into custody and are scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 6.

Further, another passenger, a 31-year-old woman also from Englehart, was charged with drug possession, having liquor in an open container in an unauthorized place, possession of unmarked cigarettes, disobeying a court order and failing to comply with a probation order.

She was released and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 27.
