Northern Ont. police save stranded cat being attacked by ravens

Wednesday afternoon, police in Hearst, Ont., came to the rescue of a cat stranded on a roof and being attacked by ravens.

A routine foot patrol in downtown Hearst, Ont., on Wednesday afternoon turned into a rescue mission when officers were told about a cat stranded on a rooftop, under attack by ravens.

A resident alerted the Ontario Provincial Police to the kitty’s plight around 1:30 p.m. The distressed cat was stuck on a high roof on Edward Street.

“A crowd quickly gathered as the cat, audibly in distress, attempted to avoid swooping ravens,” police said in a news release.

“Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the OPP coordinated with the Town of Hearst, whose municipal workers responded swiftly with a bucket truck. They raised the bucket to the peak of the roof, where the frightened cat wasted no time jumping to safety.”

Among the rescuers was a new officer on her first shift who had “an unforgettable way to begin her career, seeing first-hand the strong partnership between police and the community,” police said.

“The James Bay OPP would like to thank the Town of Hearst staff and residents for their quick action and support.”
