Northern Ont. man on probation charged with assault with a weapon

A 27-year-old man has been charged after Sault police say he assaulted a stranger with a belt on Thursday morning.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service said officers responded to a report of an assault in the 600 block of Wellington Street East shortly before 9 a.m. on Sept. 18.

“The investigation revealed the accused assaulted a victim, who is not known to them, with a belt when they were asked to leave a property,” police said in a news release.

Officers subsequently located the accused in the 700 block of Wellington Street East.

The man was charged with assault with a weapon and failing to comply with a probation order.

He was released from custody on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 17.
