Northern Ont. boaters, dog rescued from capsized vessel

Three people and a dog were rescued from Meadow Lake south of Timmins after their boat overturned Saturday. Fire crews located the group in a rescue vessel.

Three individuals and a dog were rescued from the waters of Meadow Lake in Timmins, Ont., on Saturday afternoon after their boat capsized.

Emergency crews from the Timmins Fire Department were dispatched to the scene at about 12:33 p.m. on Sept. 6 following reports of an overturned vessel located about eight kilometres south on Pine Street.

A challenging response

The rescue operation required the deployment of the department’s rescue boat from a separate access point.

“Due to the difficulty locating the boat from the Meadow Lake shoreline, crews launched the fire department’s rescue boat from Wealthy Lakes and travelled approximately six minutes to reach the boaters in distress,” the fire service said in a news release Monday.

All occupants safe with no injuries

The three boaters and their dog were found alongside their boat and successfully pulled from the water. They were transferred to the Cochrane District Paramedic Services for medical assessment, where they were found to be showing early signs of hypothermia.

“All were released with no injuries reported,” the City said.

The Timmins Fire Department used the incident to reiterate critical water safety practices for all residents.

“Always wear a properly fitted personal flotation device and carry an approved emergency kit,” said Timmins’ Deputy Fire Chief Scott Foster in the release.
