North Bay police warn of grandparent scam surge

The North Bay Police Service is alerting the public to a sharp increase in reported ‘grandparent scams,’ a deceptive scheme that preys on families by fabricating emergencies.

Authorities are urging residents, particularly older adults, to be extremely cautious of unsolicited calls where the caller claims a loved one is in urgent trouble.

“We are aware of at least four reports of attempted grandparent scams in North Bay today alone,” said Det. Const. Zack Dagg in a news release.

In these incidents, scammers falsely claim that a relative has been in a car accident, arrested, or is in some other form of legal jeopardy. The callers, who may pose as a distressed grandchild or even a lawyer, use high-pressure tactics to create a sense of panic and urgency.

“Numerous community members have reported receiving calls from individuals falsely claiming that a loved one is in urgent trouble and requesting immediate payment,” the police service said in a community advisory on Monday.

A key element of the scam is the request for payment through unconventional and hard-to-trace methods.

“Scammers typically request payment via gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or couriers,” said police.

Faud of fear and secrecy

Dagg explained that the emotional manipulation is central to the scam’s success.

Acting Insp. Jody deHaas echoed the warning, emphasizing the importance of taking a moment to verify any unexpected request for money.

“We urge the community to remain vigilant,” she said.

“Taking a moment to verify any unusual request for money can protect you and your loved ones. Share this information with friends and family, and report suspicious activity immediately. Your report may prevent others from falling victim.”

Police advise residents to “pause and verify” by calling the family member directly at a known number or to ask questions that only the real relative would know. They also recommend being wary of any request for payment via gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers.

The public is encouraged to report any attempted fraud to the North Bay Police Service at 705-497-5555 (option 5), or to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers.

“Your assistance can make a meaningful difference in ongoing investigations,” police said.
