North Bay police seize $50K in heroin

Four suspects have been charged after a roadside check in North Bay this week uncovered 248.5 grams of what police believe to be heroin.

Two people from Toronto and two from North Bay have been charged after a roadside check in North Bay this week uncovered 248.5 grams of what police believe to be heroin.

The incident began at 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 14, when police were conducting roadside sobriety checks along with the Ontario Provincial Police near bypass and Frost Street area.

“During the check, a driver failed to produce a valid driver’s licence,” police said in a news release Thursday.

“Members directed the vehicle to pull to the side of the road for further investigation, but the driver attempted to leave the area.”

Police caught up to the vehicle and, once it was stopped, officers noticed the passengers weren’t wearing seatbelts. At that point, police asked for the identification.

Outstanding arrest warrants

“A records check on the identification provided by the accused revealed an outstanding warrant from the London area for robbery with a weapon and disguise with intent,” police said.

“During the arrest, a search located a large quantity of suspected heroin.”

One of the suspects from Toronto who initially gave ID also had an outstanding arrest warrant.

In addition to the $50,000 in suspected heroin, police also seized $5,045 in cash.

A 39-year-old man from Toronto and a 28-year-old from Toronto, as well as two men from North Bay, ages 21 and 29, were charged with drug trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime. The 39-year-old was also charged with impersonation to avoid arrest.

All four were held in custody ahead of a bail hearing.
