North Bay police arrest suspect in daytime break-in spree

The North Bay Police Service has arrested a 61-year-old man in connection with a series of four daylight break-and-enters that occurred over the summer.

The accused, a local resident, faces four counts of breaking and entering and four counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

A quick arrest and detailed investigation

The arrest followed a report of a break-and-enter in progress on Vimy Street on the evening of Sept. 6. Officers responded at approximately 6:15 p.m.

“When confronted, the accused fled and was then located and arrested by NBPS at approximately 6:23 p.m.,” the service said in a news release.

Subsequent investigation, which included DNA identification, linked the man to three other break-and-enter case:

• July 21 in the Lee Avenue area
• July 27 in the McLaren Street area
• August 18 in the McIntyre Street area

A ‘violation’ of safety

Police noted that all of the incidents involved noteworthy thefts.

“Each of these incidents occurred during daylight hours and involved the theft of a significant amount of personal belongings, including jewelry, cash and electronic devices,” the police service said.

“I want to commend the dedicated work of our officers and investigators whose quick action and persistence led to this arrest,” said Chief Daryl Longworth. “We will continue to use every tool available to bring offenders to justice and safeguard the homes and families of North Bay.”

Police said the investigation into these incidents is ongoing.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
