North Bay man charged with making threats in social media video

One person has been charged following an investigation into threats in Mattawa linked to a video on social media.

Ontario Provincial Police said the investigation began May 28 when police received “information regarding a video circulating on social media of an individual making threats to bring a firearm to a summer event and harm those in attendance.”

North Bay OPP took over the investigation and, on June 4, executed a search warrant at a residence on Wyld Street in North Bay.

“One individual was taken into custody,” police said in a news release June 5.

“No firearms were located during the search.”

Making threats a serious matter

A 34-year-old man has been charged with making threats and was released from custody. He has a date in the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on Aug. 18.

“The OPP takes all threats of violence seriously,” police said.

“Incidents involving threats to public gatherings are treated as high priority. Resources are deployed to assess risk, identify those responsible and take appropriate action to protect the community.”

Police thanked the public for reporting the video.

“Prompt reporting of concerning behaviour is critical in ensuring community safety,” the OPP said.

“Individuals are reminded that making threats can have serious criminal consequences, regardless of intent.”
