New charges laid against one of the Sault men accused of disabling cameras, locks at local apartment

A 31-year-old Sault Ste. Marie man already linked to a March incident at a local apartment building now faces new allegations of obstructing police and violating release orders.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service said the accused was rearrested at about 2 p.m. on April 7 by officers with the Division 2 Unit patrolling Wellington Street East.

“On April 3, officers patrolling Queen Street East saw the accused breaching the conditions of their release by communicating with a co-accused in a recent incident,” police said in a news release.

“When officers attempted to arrest them, the accused physically resisted and ran away.”

A warrant was obtained, leading to the arrest two days later.

Initial incident

The initial investigation began March 4, when 911 operators received a report that someone had tampered with security cameras and exterior door locks at a building in the 600 block of Wellington Street East.

Police previously said the 31-year-old was among four non-tenants who “tampered with security measures to gain entry into the building.” He was arrested March 20 on an unrelated call, where officers said they found a BB gun replica pistol in his pocket. At that time, he faced charges including carrying a concealed weapon and mischief.

New charges

The accused now faces additional charges of obstructing a peace officer and eight counts of failing to comply with a release order.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Other co-accused

The other people charged in connection with the same March 4 incident include a 37-year-old woman arrested April 2, then again on April 3 for breaching her release conditions and two men, ages 56 and 30, arrested March 6 and 11, respectively.
