Motorist charged with impaired after police investigate vehicle in a ditch

Efforts to reduce impaired driving in the northeast seem to be working in some communities – provincial police say stats are still high.

A 22-year-old has been charged with multiple impaired driving offences after a vehicle crashed into a ditch on Highway 17 on Friday evening.

On Feb. 28 at about 8:30 p.m., officers with Ontario Provincial Police’s (OPP) Nipissing West detachment along with emergency medical services (EMS,) responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash in which the vehicle ended up in a ditch.

“The driver of the vehicle was transported to the local hospital by EMS with minor injuries,” OPP said.

As a result of the investigation, the male Sudbury driver has been charged with three impaired driving offences – including novice driver having a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) above zero and having a BAC of more than 80.

In addition to the charges, the accused also had their licence suspended for 90 days and is scheduled to appear in court in Sudbury on March 27.

The vehicle involved was also impounded by police for seven days at the owner’s expense.

OPP reminded the public to “make the call,” and dial 911 if they see a possible impaired driver on our roadways, waterways, or trails.

“Impaired driving never ends well,” said police.

“Please plan a way to get home safely.”
