Ministry of Labour issues 4 orders, 2 requirements after death at northern Ont. gold mine

Investigation following death at Cote Mine The province and local police are investigating after a worker found unconscious Friday at Cote Mine died.

Following the death of a contractor working at the site of a northern Ontario gold mine last Friday, the Ministry of Labour has issued four orders and two requirements.

An employee of Moreau, a contractor for IAMGOLD's Cote Gold Mine in Gogama, was found unconscious at the site and could not be revived.

The victim was not on shift at the time, IAMGOLD spokesperson Graeme Jennings said.

As a result, "two orders were issued to the reported constructor, IAMGOLD. Two orders and two requirements were issued to the reported employer, Moreau."

Citing the ongoing investigation, the ministry said it could not share further details about the orders or requirements.

"Our priority has to be to protect the integrity of the investigation," the ministry said.

"Our sincere condolences go out to the worker’s family, friends and colleagues."

CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca has reached out to both the mining company and contractor about the orders and requirements and is awaiting a response.

No word on the cause of death or identity of the victim.

Bryan Wilson, vice-president and GM of Cote Gold, said that the mining site is expected to open early 2024, will pour gold in the first quarter of next year and will have 540 employees and 250 contractors working there.
