The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service (WTPS) is reinforcing its community-focused policing approach through youth engagement and all-terrain vehicle safety education -- aiming to foster trust and promote safe practices in Wiikwemkoong.

Supporting youth at Manitoulin Island track event

On a sunny Thursday in Manitowaning, WTPS leadership joined community members to cheer on young athletes at the Island Track event. Police Chief Ron Gignac, Ogimaa Ominika, and Inspector Duffy attended to show support for students from Wiikwemkoong, emphasizing the importance of police visibility beyond enforcement.

“This event was a great reminder that community safety goes beyond enforcement – it’s also about being present, celebrating our youth, and building trust,” said Gignac, in a news release.

“We were thrilled to see the talent and spirit on display.”

The presence of police and community leaders at the event helped strengthen relationships with youth and families, reinforcing a message of mutual respect between law enforcement and the public.

Promoting ATV safety ahead of summer

With warmer weather increasing ATV use, WTPS has launched a safety initiative led by Officers Shawana and VanDrunen. Patrols on department ATVs allow officers to engage directly with riders, discussing protective gear, legal requirements, and responsible operation.

To expand these efforts, WTPS is collaborating with the Ontario Provincial Police to host an ATV Safety Education Session on June 16 at Wiikwemkoong High School. This session will cover:

• Wear It Right - Why helmets and gear matter
• Check Before You Ride - How to inspect your ATV
• Know the Law - ATV rules and regulations
• Ride Smart - Best practices for safe, respectful riding

“WTPS has a goal of keeping the community safe and continuing to promote the well-being of the residents,” said Gignac.

“We will be actively patrolling on ATVs throughout the summer and into the fall to ensure safe, informed, and enjoyable use.”

A broader commitment to community safety

The ATV safety program is part of WTPS’s wider strategy to engage with residents through proactive initiatives, including marine and water safety education, K-9 unit visits, and a forthcoming school liaison officer program.

“By building these relationships with our young people in the realms of ATV, marine, and water safety, we seek to enhance their personal safety and well-being for years to come when enjoying outdoor activities, hunting, fishing, riding, and camping,” the police service said.

WTPS went on to thank the community for its ongoing support and underscored the importance of collaboration in maintaining a safe and connected community.
