Manitoulin Island bust sees $30K in drugs seized

Wikwemikong police say a response to a trespassing report Thursday night led to the seizure of cash and drugs worth more than $30,000.

A call regarding an unwanted person at a residence on Wikwemikong Way in Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory on Manitoulin Island led to a significant drug seizure and charges on Thursday night.

Officers responded to the call at about 9:34 p.m. on Jan. 8, the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service said in a news release.

“Upon police arrival, the male fled the residence but was located a short time later by officers and taken into custody without incident,” said police.

Drugs, cash seized

Tribal police conducted searches at the scene.

“Further investigation led to the seizure of a significant quantity of suspected fentanyl and cocaine, with an estimated street value of more than $30,000,” said police.

The police service said officers also seized a substantial amount of cash and several cellphones.

As a result, a 22-year-old man from Etobicoke, Ont., has been charged with drug trafficking, breaking and entering and possession of property obtained by crime.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Police reiterate commitment to community safety

The police service’s chief, Ron Gignac, linked the incident to the force’s ongoing priorities.

“With the start of a new year, we remain steadfast in our commitment to cracking down on illegal drugs and ensuring the safety of the community,” he said.

“The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service states it remains committed to proactive enforcement and community safety,” the police force added.

Gignac also emphasized the collaborative nature of the police service’s work.

“We will continue working closely with Ogimaa Ominika, the band council, and our community partners to make Wiikwemkoong a safer place to live for everyone. Community members play a vital role in this effort,” he said.

“We encourage anyone who sees suspicious activity to report it to WTPS or anonymously through Crime Stoppers,” Gignac added.
