Man faces impaired, stunt driving charges after Hwy. 17 traffic stop

A 54-year-old man from Elliot Lake is facing a series of charges – including both impaired driving and stunt driving – after a traffic stop for excessive speed in Baldwin Township earlier this month.

Ontario Provincial Police say the incident occurred at about 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 15, when officers were conducting speed enforcement on Highway 17.

High-speed observation leads to traffic stop

“A vehicle was observed travelling 104 km/h in a 60 km/h zone and a traffic stop to investigate further was initiated,” OPP said in a news release.

During the stop, police administered a roadside breathalyzer test using an approved screening device. The device registered a ‘fail,’ leading to the driver being taken into custody.

Numerous charges laid

The driver now faces a list of charges from the encounter. He has been charged with stunt driving, speeding, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, driving a motor vehicle with no plates, failing to surrender a permit for a motor vehicle, failing to apply for a permit upon becoming the owner of a vehicle and breaching a probation order.

Additionally, the man was also charged with driving a motor vehicle with liquor readily available and two impaired driving offences – including having a blood alcohol concentration of more than 80.

More consequences

Further, in addition to the charges, under provincial law, the driver also received a 90-day licence suspension and the vehicle involved was impounded for seven days.

The accused is scheduled to appear in an Espanola courtroom on Nov. 17 to answer to the charges.
