A 63-year-old man from Warren is facing a series of charges following an incident that began with a routine traffic stop in Callander, Ont., last month and ended with his arrest days later. Provincial police said the accused initially provided a false identity to an officer and fled, but a subsequent investigation led officers to his whereabouts and resulted in him being taken into custody on an outstanding warrant. Fled the traffic stop The case began on July 23 at about 5:15 p.m., when an Ontario Provincial Police officer conducted a traffic stop on Highway 11. The stop was initiated after the cruiser’s automated licence plate recognition system identified a vehicle associated with an expired permit. What began as a routine enforcement action quickly escalated when the driver chose not to cooperate fully with the officer. “During the investigation, the driver provided police with a false identity before fleeing the traffic stop,” OPP said in a news release. The driver’s decision to deceive the officer and then flee the scene transformed what might have been a simple citation into a more serious criminal matter. Identification and arrest Following the driver’s escape, officers continued their investigation to determine the true identity of the individual who had provided false information. Through their efforts, investigators were able to correctly identify the driver and subsequently obtained an arrest warrant for the accused. On July 28, OPP members successfully located the man at a residence in Warren, where he was taken into custody. Numerous charges As a result of the investigation, the accused now faces a substantial number of charges under both the Criminal Code and the Highway Traffic Act, including two counts of operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited, three counts of driving while under a suspension, obstructing a peace officer, failing to stop for police, failing to identify oneself, using a plate not authorized for a vehicle, failing to surrender a motor vehicle permit and failing to surrender an insurance card. Following his arrest, the accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing in North Bay.
