Ont. man charged after advancing with knife in altercation: police

A 52-year-old North Bay man has been arrested and charged after police say an altercation between two acquaintances escalated to an assault with a weapon over the weekend.

The North Bay Police Service said the incident occurred in the early hours of Jan. 24 at a residence on the 500 block of Lakeshore Drive. The accused and the victim, who are known to one another, became involved in an altercation.

“Our priority in situations like this is the safety of everyone involved,” said acting Insp. Vince Corrente in a news release.

Police said the confrontation turned criminal during the incident.

“During the incident, the accused brandished a knife and advanced toward the victim. The victim fled the residence and contacted police,” said the police service.

Police said officers then located the accused and took him into custody without incident.

As a result, the local man is charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failing to comply with a probation order.

Police authorities commended the responding officers for their actions following the incident.

“Our patrol section acted quickly and professionally, resulting in a safe arrest and preventing further harm,” said Corrente.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing, police said.
