After the Laurentian University senate rejected a non-confidence vote Tuesday aimed at president Lynn Wells, the chair of the university’s board of governors is calling for unity.

In a statement, Jay Barbeau said the board saw the in-camera vote “as a decision to come together in the spirit of rebuilding the university, and we will honour that commitment.”

“We are genuine in our desire to work with the senate, faculty and all members of the university community to continue along that path,” Barbeau said.

“We also heard the concerns raised during today’s discussion and are committed to working with senators and the broader community to address them.”

He said the school is making progress in recovering from its high-profile bankruptcy process.

“Enrolment is growing, more francophone students are choosing Laurentian, and the university is rebuilding its partnerships and role in the community,” Barbeau said.

Listening tour

“This progress reflects the work of faculty, staff, senate, administration and the board. We remain focused on continuing that momentum and supporting the university’s long-term strength and stability.”

The non-confidence motion was brought forward by a member of the senate who also belongs to the faculty union.

The Laurentian University Faculty Association is upset after it emerged that Wells received a large pay increase – something not disclosed until late February after LUFA members ended their strike.

The non-confidence motion was introduced at a recent senate meeting, but was then deferred until the April meeting for further discussion.

Wells also issued a statement, vowing to listen to the concerns that have been raised as part of her “listening tour.”

“Senate plays an important role within the university and its perspectives are a valued part of our governance,” Wells said.

“As I continue my listening tour over the coming weeks, I encourage you all to engage and share your thoughts. Please continue to reach out to me if you want to connect. You can also share your ideas through the online consultation portal. Your input will be critical as we determine how we can address the challenges being raised.”
