Kirkland Lake traffic stop leads to impaired-related charge for local teen

Efforts to reduce impaired driving in the northeast seem to be working in some communities – provincial police say stats are still high.

Provincial police have charged a 19-year-old man from Kirkland Lake after a traffic stop in the town earlier this month.

Members of the Kirkland Lake Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment conducted a traffic stop at about 4:20 a.m. on Feb. 13.

“(The) vehicle was observed failing to maintain its lane and taking a sharp turn before parking diagonally,” said police in a news release.

“Upon speaking with the driver officers determined the individual had consumed an alcoholic beverage.”

As a result of the investigation, the motorist is now charged with failing or refusing to comply with a demand.

“Kirkland Lake and surrounding area is reminded that drivers who register a fail or refusal to comply with the demand will result in a 90-day licence suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment,” said OPP.

In addition to the charges, the accused did also had their licence suspended for 90 days and the vehicle involved was impounded by police for seven days at the owner’s expense.

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear in court in North Bay on March 6 to answer the charge.

OPP reminded the public to “make the call,” and dial 911 if they see a possible impaired driver on our roadways, waterways, or trails.

“If you suspect that someone is driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, it is important to call 911 to report it,” said police.
