Kapuskasing man, 35, charged with sexually assaulting child

A 35-year-old Kapuskasing man on probation was charged Sunday after the sexual assault of a female child was reported to police.

The man was arrested the same day the James Bay detachment was called, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Monday.

“The two were known to each other,” OPP Const. Kyler Brouwer told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an email.

The charges include two counts each of sexual assault and invitation to sexual touching on a person under 16 years of age, sexual interference, one count of causing a disturbance and four counts of failing to comply with probation.

“The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kapuskasing on a future date,” OPP said.

“Due to the nature of the incident, the name of the accused will not be released in order to protect the identity of the victim.”

“The age of consent to sexual activity is 16 years,” the Government of Canada says.

“In some cases, the age of consent is higher (for example, when there is a relationship of trust, authority or dependency).”
