One person charged, shelter-in-place ends in Kirkland Lake

Following a lengthy shelter-in-place incident this week in Kirkland Lake, a suspect has been charged with numerous weapons and assault offences.

Ontario Provincial Police say a shelter-in-place has ended in the area of Prospect Avenue and Government Road in Kirkland Lake.

The advisory was issued Jan. 6 around 2 p.m. following a report of an assault with a weapon, police said in a news release Wednesday.

“As part of the initial response, members of the public in the affected area were asked to follow shelter-in-place precautions,” police said.

“The situation was resolved safely, and the individual is now in custody.”

Weapons, assault charges

A 41-year-old man from Kirkland Lake has been charged with assault, assault with a weapon, pointing a firearm, weapons possession and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Kirkland Lake Ontario Court of Justice on Jan. 7.

“The OPP recognizes the emotional impact that receiving a shelter-in-place advisory can have and appreciates the public’s patience as officers worked to investigate and resolve the situation,” the release said.

“The Kirkland Lake OPP thanks community members for their cooperation and understanding.”
