Impaired driving charges laid after Highway 11 traffic stop

A 20-year-old man from South River is facing impaired driving charges following a proactive traffic stop by Ontario Provincial Police early Sunday morning.

The incident occurred at about 2:20 a.m. when an OPP officer observed a pickup truck speeding southbound on Highway 11 before it abruptly turned into the Ontario Ministry of Transportation scales area.

“Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and determined the driver had been consuming an alcoholic beverage,” said OPP in a news release Monday.

The driver was taken into custody and transported to the North Bay OPP detachment for further testing.

“North Bay OPP remains committed to keeping our roads safe through proactive enforcement and public education,” said acting OPP Sgt. Kyler Brouwer.

Charges laid, licence suspended and vehicle impounded

As a result of the investigation, the driver has been charged with two impaired driving offences – including having a blood alcohol concentration of more than 80.

Additionally, he received a 90-day administrative driver’s licence suspension and the vehicle involved was impounded for seven days.

He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court in North Bay on Nov. 6.
