Hwy. 17 speeding stop leads to impaired charges: OPP

A 26-year-old man from Baldwin Township faces several charges including impaired driving after provincial police say he was stopped for speeding on Highway 17 and Dupuis Road.

Ontario Provincial Police said the incident occurred at about 9:15 p.m. on May 17 while officers were conducting traffic-related duties and stopped a black pickup truck for speeding.

“When police spoke to the driver, a strong odour of alcoholic beverage was emanating from their breath. A roadside test registered a fail and the driver was subsequently arrested,” OPP said in a news release.

Officers said that once back at the detachment, the driver was uncooperative and did not provide further suitable breath samples.

As a result, the motorist was charged with speeding, impaired driving and refusing to comply with a demand.

In addition to the charge, the man also received a 90-day driver’s licence suspension and the pickup truck involved was towed and impounded for seven days at the owner’s expense.

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear in court in Espanola on July 6.

Public reminder against impaired driving

The police service used the incident to emphasize the dangers of impaired driving and to asked for public’s assistance in keeping roads safe.

“OPP remind motorists that no amount of alcohol or drug is acceptable to consume and drive,” said police.

“Should you observe a suspected impaired driver, please dial 911 or contact the Ontario Provincial Police.”
