A proactive traffic enforcement stop by Ontario Provincial Police last month resulted in multiple charges against an Oshawa resident. OPP said officers stopped a vehicle travelling at an excessive speed on Highway 17 in Baldwin Township shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 19. “During the investigation, police observed signs of drug impairment and arrested the driver,” provincial police said in a social media post Friday. Vehicle search yields suspected drugs OPP said a subsequent search of the vehicle led to the seizure of about 497 grams of suspected cocaine, with an estimated street value of $50,000, along with a small quantity of suspected cannabis that was readily accessible within the vehicle. As a result of the investigation, the 37-year-old driver from Oshawa was charged with impaired driving, stunt driving, having cannabis readily available in a vehicle and drug trafficking. In addition to the charges, the motorist’s driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and their vehicle was impounded for 14 days. Proactive enforcement Provincial police used the incident to remind the public of the importance and value of proactive enforcement. “Proactive enforcement continues to play an important role in keeping impaired drivers and illegal drugs off our roads and out of our communities,” wrote Const. Bev Gauthier in the post.
