Hanmer motorist charged with stunt driving near North Bay

A 28-year-old driver from the Greater Sudbury community of Hanmer, has been charged with stunt driving after Ontario Provincial Police stopped his pickup truck for speeding in another northern Ontario community this weekend.

OPP said officers stopped the pickup on Sunday in Rutherglen, about 30 kilometres east of North Bay along Highway 17.

Police said the motorist was travelling 113 km/h in a posted 70 km/h zone.

In Ontario, stunt driving includes driving 40 km/h or more over the speed limit on roads with a posted limit under 80 km/h. The offence also covers dangerous behaviours such as racing and intentionally cutting off other vehicles.

The charge carries severe and immediate penalties. The driver received a 30-day licence suspension and the pickup involved was impounded for 14 days.

“Slow down,” said OPP Constable Kyler Brouwer, in a social media post detailing the incident.

The accused now also has a future traffic court date in Ontario.

Court-imposed penalties for stunt driving may include a fine of up to $10,000, a driver’s licence suspension of up to three years and/or up to six months in jail. Drivers face a minimum first-time fine for stunt driving of $2,000 upon conviction. Motorist convicted of stunt driving may also face six demerit points, higher insurance costs and a mandatory driver improvement course.
