Handgun with tampered serial number leads to charges for Sault man

Sault police arrested a 35-year-old man on five weapons charges after seizing a handgun with a tampered serial number and ammunition.

A 35-year-old man is facing multiple firearm-related charges following an incident at a Sault Ste. Marie residence over the weekend.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service responded to a 911 call shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 13 regarding a report of a person in possession of a firearm at a home in the 300 block of Elizabeth Street.

Upon arrival, officers located and placed the individual under investigative detention.

“A search of the property located a handgun, which had its serial number tampered with, and three rounds of ammunition,” said police in a news release Wednesday.

The accused has been charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm, careless storage of a firearm, failure to comply with a release order and three other firearm-related offences.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
